METRO 2033

THE ACTION UNFOLDS MAINLY IN THE MOSCOW METRO, WHERE THE STATIONS AND PASSAGES ARE INHABITED BY PEOPLE WHO ESCAPED THE NUCLEAR STRIKE AT THAT TIME.
UNDERGROUND SURVIVORS
Thanks to the prompt action of the metro civil service, it was possible to shield them from radiation. almost all stations had sealing gaskets closed, and anti-radiation filters were installed in the ventilation and water supply rooms.
The survivors live mostly in the underground stations. There are poorer and richer stations.

Somewhere people survive, at the level of homelessness, and eat rats.

There are middle-class ones that have their own farms and are supplied with electricity from generators of various types, but due to their low power, the stations often only have low-powered emergency lighting.

There are also those, such as the stations of the Koltsevaya Line or Arbatskaya, where all are available.
STATION LIFE
The most influential and rich fractions are the Commonwealth of Hansa Stations (which occupied all stations of the Ring Line) and Polis (Arbatskaya, Borovitskaya, Aleksandrovsky Sad and Lenin Library). Also quite strong are the Red Line and the Fourth Reich.
STATIONS AND STATES
Some stations are independent (e.g., Kuznetsky Most, Paveletskaya). Some stations are occupied by organised crime (Kitay-gorod, Novye Cheryomushki, Profsoyuznaya) or exist in conditions of anarchy. The groups trade with each other, make alliances and fight.
SOON AFTER THE NUCLEAR WAR, THE CENTRALISED UNDERGROUND SYSTEM BROKE DOWN. STATIONS BEGAN TO EXIST SEPARATELY. SOME UNITED AROUND IDEAS, RELIGIONS AND STRONGER STATIONS
People living in the metro eat what they have been able to grow in the tunnels. Mostly mushrooms, but at some stations potatoes, tomatoes and cucumbers are also grown. Pigs and other animals are also raised at many stations. The poorest Metro residents eat rats.
There is trade in the Underworld, and the universal currency is 5.45×39mm ammunition made before the War.

UNDERGROUND CARAVANS
Caravaners (also shuttle trader) is a collective name for travelling merchants in the world of Metro 2033. Caravans are, as a rule, columns of variously protected vehicles, for example, a train carriage, with the help of which traders can move from one settlement to another.

Travelling between stations can be very dangerous. You can often encounter mutants and bandits. Trains in the underground have not been running almost since the beginning of the apocalypse.

MUTANTS
In addition to nuclear weapons, bacteriological weapons were also used in the last war, which caused rapid mutations. Animals familiar to humans — dogs, cats, rats — became mutants. In addition, new forms of life have appeared on Earth that have no obvious genetic links with the previous fauna. They live both on the surface of the Earth and in abandoned stations and tunnels. Plants have also undergone mutations. Here are a few examples:

WATCHER
According to most facts, the guardians evolved from common rats, as indicated by the nature of the tail. However, some believe that the "ancestors" of these creatures were dogs and cats. They are rarely found in abandoned tunnels, for they prefer buildings on the surface, where they arrange their shelters. These mutants are extremely territorial creatures, and if an intruder appears on their territory, they will fiercely defend it, but if he leaves their home, the guards will leave him alone. They live and move in fairly large packs, ranging from several dozen to several hundred individuals.
DARK ONES
Dark Ones are intelligent beings. They are able to read human thoughts from a distance and control their consciousness. Apparently, without wishing it, the Dark Ones have a psychic effect on humans and other mutants, causing those impenetrable panic fear. Outwardly, adult Dark Ones look more like humanoid aliens than mutants. They have black glossy skin (hence the nickname) and large eyes without whites or pupils. The adult is two heads taller than an adult human. It is not known from what creature the mutant species originated, but according to some records found, Dark Ones were created in government bunkers some time before the nuclear catastrophe as a later stage of human evolution. Dark Ones were created by the military in the D-6 bunker as part of Project Darkness, until one day a biologist released some specimens from a vivarium.
LIBRARIAN
Librarians live in the Lenin State Library, for which they got their name. Able to think and calculate tactics during attack and defense, reproduce for a person his speech in the same intonations, while not understanding it. It is believed that the Librarians are descended from gorillas that escaped from the zoo some time after the Cataclysm. This proves the strange appearance of the mutants, their gait, their huge paws and the way they beat their chests with them majestically. That said, everyone who had dealt with the Librarians and survived believed that the Librarians were not beasts, but more intelligent beings.
LIANA
Lianas are mostly houseplants that have mutated as a result of heavy irradiation. They look like jungle vines with a "palm" at the tip. They come in black and green colors. Upon finding a victim, vines attack with a powerful lightning strike that can easily break a gas mask. They have stems as thick as your arm, giving off a very greasy sheen. They can be covered with large, ugly flowers that emit a suffocating, heady scent.
DEMON
Also known as gargoyles. Demons resemble bats or some birds of prey in design. Also reptilian due to their scaly skin. They have huge, two-metre-sized webbed wings, a blunt face and developed pectoral muscles. They dwell only on the surface, breaking into small flocks or hanging out a length to a single point. The approach of a demon can be recognised by a distinctive roar, which is hard to confuse with anything else, and the heavy flapping of wings. During the hunt, it likes to pick up the victim and lift it to a great height, after which — to drop.
NOSALIS
A stout creature that grows to under two metres tall, with a greyish-pink colouring and a folding cover that is almost completely devoid of fur. The habitat of ghouls is abandoned tunnels, mines, caves, catacombs or bridges. The debate rages about the nature of these creatures. Someone claims that they mutated from moles, someone — that the progenitor of the ghoul was an ordinary pig. There are opinions that the ghoul — in general, a person affected by radiation or bacteriological weapons, causing an instantaneous change in the genotype of the individual.

Moscow on the surface in the novel "Metro 2033" is a dark and dangerous place, where after the nuclear disaster people survived only in underground metro stations. In the novel Metro 2033, stalkers go to the surface of Moscow in search of answers to their questions and hope for a better future.
The sky above Moscow is covered with ominous black clouds, from which radioactive rain pours down, turning the land into a poisoned desert. The wind drives scraps of newspapers and sheets through the streets, reminding of former life and the lost past.
One of the most dangerous places on the surface of Moscow are the ruins of once majestic buildings. Now they have become home to mutants and anomali.
ON THE SURFACE
However, despite all the horrors and dangers, traces of former beauty can still be found on the surface of Moscow. In some places there are remnants of beautiful parks, statues and monuments.
ANOMALIES
BUT IT IS NOT ONLY WARS AND MUTANTS THAT POST-NUCLEAR MOSCOW IS FAMOUS FOR. THERE IS ALSO A PLACE FOR MYSTICISM. NUCLEAR STRIKES BROKE THROUGH THE SHELL OF THE INFORMATION WORLD — A KIND OF ANALOGUE OF THE NOOSPHERE, WHERE THE SOULS OF THE DEAD GO, INTO THE GAPS AND INTANGIBLE ENTITIES RUSHED, AND IF THE USUAL MUTANTS DEVOUR FLESH AND BLOOD, THESE ANOMALIES AFFECT THE MIND.
Sometimes while wandering around the tracks and abandoned stations, you can hear a ringing sound. The sound comes from an old wall phone that has been unable to receive calls for 20 years. Partly because of broken communications and partly because there is no one to make the call. But if a careless traveller picks it up, he hears a familiar voice. The voice of someone close to him. His best friend, his favourite girlfriend or his mother. All callers have one thing in common. They’re very dear to the person they’re trying to reach. They’re also long dead. No-one knows what the souls from the other side of the world are trying to convey. It’s not clear if the callers are ghosts or if the anomaly is of a different nature. One thing is certain. Unlike the voice of a trumpet, the call is completely harmless. However, if you find yourself in a railway line or an abandoned station, and an old telephone suddenly rings nearby, it’s best to just walk past it. It’s not for you.
Ghost train stories are by no means unknown fiction. Perhaps they appeared together with the first trains and of course just could not help but migrate into the folklore of the world based on the underground railway. From the outside, a ghost train is not entirely visible and bears little resemblance to a normal train. The observer will only notice the light coming from the windows, and the train travelling by is like a flicker of lights accompanied by the quiet clatter of wheels. If you point a torch beam at the anomaly, you can see the silhouettes of people. These are the last passengers who died shortly after the war began. Sometimes children’s laughter comes from the cabin, but more often the spirits are silent and quiet. Contact with a ghost train almost always ends in death, but there have been cases where travellers have survived after encountering an otherworldly entity. Either way, experienced stalkers prefer to run away from the tracks when they hear a muffled clatter in the semi-darkness. A sound that has no place in this world.
The anomaly is a sound — voices and screams of dead people — coming from pipes in some tunnels. When listening to them, you may experience unpleasant, sometimes painful sensations. The anomaly is a serious health hazard. A person who is under the influence of pipes begins to gradually lose reason or consciousness, in some cases — to see hallucinations and delirium. If you stay under the influence of trumpet voices for too long, it can be fatal.
Some anomalies in the metro world are of a near-scientific nature. One of the most famous is the electromagnetic anomaly. It occurs not only in the underground, but also on the surface. The anomaly is a flying ball of bright blue colour. During the passage of the anomaly in the underground, the surrounding space is electrified, the rails begin to hum and there are numerous sparks. It appears suddenly and destroys moving bodies. To avoid contact with the Electroanomaly, one must freeze in place. If a person turns on the spot, the anomaly does not react to him. If you shoot it, it returns to the person, but soon flies away again and disappears.
Looks like a three-dimensional black shadow. Can move, make sounds. Han (one of the characters in the book) said the following: "We have done a terrible, unique thing to our world. We destroyed not only the material part of it, but also the subtle, invisible part. Atomic explosions have vaporised the information fields that housed Heaven and Hell. The souls have nowhere to go now and even after death a person remains here". The souls of people continue to stay in the place where they died and perform the actions that preceded death. Some of them continue to faithfully fulfil their duties that they had in life.
And don't you dare look at the stars of the Kremlin towers...

IS THERE LIFE BEYOND THE MKAD???
For a long time there was an opinion among Metro residents that no one in Russia or the whole world has survived except the Moscow Metro.

However, human life outside Moscow actually exists. The reasons for Moscow’s isolation are told in the plot of the book Metro 2035, and the computer game Metro Exodus, which describes the world outside of Moscow.
What happens outside of Moscow is also described in a series of novels in the franchise as part of a literary inter-authorial international project launched directly by Dmitry Glukhovsky himself, the creator of the universe and author of the first three novels.
